I love this song because changing yourself to fit someone else’s expectations on how a person should act isn’t a relationship, because they aren’t friends with someone if the other person isn’t their true self around them, because that person isn’t themselves so the person they care about doesn’t exist. “I’m done, I’m done.” It’s when you finally have a intervention with the person, you can’t stop or change yourself for them. So there isn’t need for a relationship when you aren’t even there for.

1:12 I saw a video that was of a Vocal Coach, Tristan Paredes, reacting to this song, and at that part, he noticed that on the word "gun" Melanie was kind of suppressing her voice and going back to the notes before. I think this sort of suppression of her vocals is supposed to represent how people pleasers, types of maskers, or anyone who has to fit into some sort of mold to be accepted (a metaphorical or figurative contortionist), have to suppress their true selves, thoughts, and ideas. It is kind of like the line "Holding back my words until my face is blue." I also love how the vocal suppression is in the line "Pushed myself into a box while you held out a gun." because that line itself represents how the figurative contortionist feels the need to fit into certain expectations and mask, push themself into a box, otherwise their reputation or appearance to someone will be held at gunpoint, about to crumble and die. The vocals in general of that line are kind of like bits and pieces of you trying to assert yourself and use your voice as the line gets more dramatic, like the figurative contortionist starting to break free from their pose/mask, until the word "gun," when the figurative contortionist realizes what they're saying and remembers that people's perspective of them may not be good if they get louder, more dramatic, or if they continue to try and break free, so they have to switch back to their previous positions and suppress their true self. Coming from a neurodivergent masker who's literal contortionist, this song means a whole lot to me and is my favorite in the album. I love how even just small details in the vocals can paint a picture of the meaning. Melanie is very smart with her lyrics and song ideas, and therefore, one of my top two favorite artists!
